How to Make Sure You Care for Composite Fillings Properly

Posted on 4/15/2025 by Rod Gore Office
Dental fillingsComposite fillings are a common type of dental restoration used to repair decayed or damaged teeth. They are made from a tooth-colored composite resin material that is bonded to the tooth, making them a popular choice for both aesthetic and functional reasons.

While composite fillings are durable, they require proper care to ensure they last as long as possible. Here are some tips on how to care for your composite fillings:

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

The most important thing you can do to care for your composite fillings is to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash.

Brushing and flossing help to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth, which can cause cavities and other dental problems. Plaque can also build up around your fillings, which can weaken the bond between the filling and the tooth. Rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash can help to kill bacteria that can cause bad breath and gum disease.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

Composite fillings are not as strong as natural teeth, so it is important to avoid hard and sticky foods that can damage them. Hard foods can chip or crack the filling, while sticky foods can pull on the filling and weaken the bond between the filling and the tooth.

Some examples of hard foods to avoid include nuts, hard candy, and ice. Sticky foods to avoid include caramel, toffee, and dried fruit.

Don't Use Your Teeth as Tools

Your teeth are not tools, so don't use them to open bottles, tear open packages, or bite on hard objects. Doing so can damage your teeth and fillings.

If you need to open a bottle or package, use a tool instead of your teeth. If you need to bite on something, use your back teeth, which are designed for grinding food.

See Your Dentist Regularly

It is important to see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can check your fillings to make sure they are in good condition and make any necessary repairs.

During your checkups, your dentist will also examine your overall oral health and look for any signs of problems. This can help to prevent problems from developing or to catch them early when they are easier to treat.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that your composite fillings last for many years to come. If you have any questions or concerns about your composite fillings, be sure to talk to your dentist.
